My name is Heidi and I am a Marine Corps brat, USAF veteran, active duty spouse, stay at home homeschooling mother of four great kids. I grew up moving every ten months to three years, making new friends and exploring new places along the way, which led me to my husband and my very blessed life today.
As a homeschooling family, our goal is to learn and grow in our community, giving back through service and support everywhere we move. Cake in the Morn was born from our love of educational, simple toys that encourage thinking, memorizing, application of knowledge, and teamwork.
As technology progresses, mainstream toys leave a child staring at a screen or pushing buttons with minimal interaction with others. In my search for wholesome, educational toys, I had a hard time finding anything that wasn’t plastic or electronic. I started making our own school toys and they were a huge hit! The first toy I made was a felt weatherboard set. Now, each morning the kids take turns leading the group in saying the Pledge of Allegiance and forecasting the day’s weather. With the weatherboard set, playing meteorologist became a big highlight of our morning school time!
Cake in the Morn has grown to include other felt stories, wooden toys sourced from local wood, games, and puzzles, ranging from baby teething rings to American Sign Language learning games. I have also written and illustrated a series of children’s books about the simple joys of the different seasons, a look at love in everyday life through simple acts of kindness, and a tour of Boston following the ducks in Make Way for Ducklings.
Both my husband and I have spent our entire lives moving every few years in support of our parents’, and now my husband’s, military careers. It is our firm belief that a home is created through our family, our relationships with others, and through the people we meet and experiences we share at each duty station. It doesn’t matter where our house is, where we are living, how long the deployment, or how long the days. What matters is how we grow as a family and serve the community where we find ourselves. Cake in the Morn’s tagline is Explore. Learn. Grow. Together. We hope to continue passing our message of family and service as Cake in the Morn grows and our family continues to relocate with each PCS.
I hope you are able to find something useful and fun here at Cake in the Morn. We love feedback, questions, requests, and all things inbetween, so please feel free to send me an email.
